Shandong men's team breaks AR

Shangdong men's track cycling team finished the 4-kilometer route with an astounding 4:09.383, bettering the Asian record of 4:10.886, in a qualification round on Tuesday.

Former Asian record holder, the Tianjin team quartet of Li Wei, Ma Teng, Chen Libin and Qu Xuelong participated in the qualification round afterward, and finished in 4:10.001.

Both the teams outperformed the Asian record that the Tianjin quartet set in the 2009 Track Cycling World Championships in Poland this March.

Tennis

HK pair make successful debut

Hong Kong tennis players Zhang Ling and Yang Zijun made a successful debut by beating Henan's Li Wanrong and Tian Ran 2-0 in Jinan on Tuesday.

At the beginning of the tournament, Zhang and Yang did not find form and the match became tough for them. As the game went on, they made adjustments in time and finally finished the set 6-3.

In the second set, the two Hong Kong girls blanked their rivals 6-0 and sealed the victory.

The tennis tournament is slated from Monday to October 27, with a total of 129 players competing. Chinese stars Li Na, Peng Shuai, Zheng Jie and Yan Zi will make appearances on Wednesday.

Weightlifting

Zhou breaks snatch WR over 75kg

Strongwoman Zhou Lulu broke the snatch world record in the +75kg division on Tuesday.

Zhou, from the Chinese Army delegation, snatched 145 kilograms in her second attempt, five kilograms more than the world record of 140 kilograms, set by Jang Mi-ran of South Korea at the Beijing Olympics last year.

The 21-year-old Zhou raised the weight to 148 kilograms, eight kilograms more than the world record, and she made it with strong will, taking the lead before the jerk.

Former Olympic champ withdraws

Athens Olympic champion Tang Gonghong withdrew from the ongoing National Games due to injury, an official from the Shandong delegation said in Jinan on Tuesday.

Thirty-year-old Tang, who won the +75kg category gold medal at the Athens Olympics, was regarded as one of the gold hopefuls in her class at these games being held in her home province Shandong.

Ma Guoqing, an official from the Shandong delegation, confirmed that Tang is not fit enough to compete.

Injuries and illness also stopped Tang from defending her champion at last year's Beijing Olympic Games.
