Cheruiyot wins Ottawa Marathon

Kenyan David Cheruiyot won the Ottawa Marathon yesterday, outracing Ethiopia's Wegayehu Girma down the stretch to capture a six-second victory in Canada's capital.

Cheruiyot, 39, won in 2 hours, 13 minutes and 23 seconds with Girma, 20, second and Morocco's Ahmed Baday third in 2:13:56.

In the women's race, Morocco's Asmae Leghzaoui lowered her course record by 63 seconds to win in 2:27:41 with Canada's Lioudmila Kortchaguina, a four-time winner of the race, second in 2:32:10 and Kenya's Irene Jerotich Kosgei third in 2:34:28.

Tseng takes LPGA Corning title

Chinese Taipei's Tseng Yani fired a two-under par 67 yesterday to capture the LPGA Corning Classic by one stroke over fast-closing American Paula Creamer and South Korean Kang Soo-yun.

Tseng finished 72 holes at 21-under par 267 to take the $225,000 top prize, despite a closing-round 65 from Creamer and a 69 from Kang.

Japan's Mike Miyazato was fourth on 269, two strokes ahead of German Sandra Gal, American Vicky Hurst, Japan's Ai Miyazato and South Korean Kim Song-hee.

Kohl announces retirement at 27

Disgraced Austrian cyclist Bernhard Kohl yesterday announced his retirement from competition at the age of 27 following a two-year suspension for doping.

“I am announcing my retirement from professional sport,” said Kohl in a press conference in Vienna.

The Austrian last October admitted to using drugs to finish third in the Tour de France as top climber after which he was banned from cycling for two years.

Red Wings rout Blackhawks 6-1

Henrik Zetterberg had two goals as the Detroit Red Wings scored three times on the power play en route to a 6-1 rout of the Chicago Blackhawks and a 3-1 lead in their Western Conference final series.

Forward Marian Hossa also scored two goals for defending champion Detroit, which moved within just one win of a return trip to the Stanley Cup finals. They can be in the finals to play against either Pittsburgh or Carolina with a win at home tomorrow. Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen also scored one each for the Red Wings.
